What is Micro Philanthropy

Micro philanthropy is a recent label placed on the gathering of small donations from a great many different individuals for a cause that is attractive to people with a wide range of incomes and resources. Sometimes referred to as the choice of the social network generation, micro philanthropy also generally involves giving not so much to an organization as to a specific individual with whom the donor seeks to develop a personal connection.  

Support for micro philanthropy most often takes the form of a web-based platform that makes it easy for the donor to select the individual, make whatever size donation they choose and then follow the story of that person over time.  This type of web site is available 24/7 to anyone who hears about it, finds it or is linked to it from another site.
