I am thirty years old, living in Ghandhi Gramam situated close to Batticaloa. My husband is a labourer who earns Rs.500.00 daily. Since my husband’s income is insufficient, 18 months ago I approached the Field Officers of the YMCA and asked for advice.
They inspected the environment of the surrounding area and advised me to take up poultry keeping as livelihood and granted me a loan of Rs.20,000.00. I used the loan to purchase day old chicks, chicken food and build a deep litter house. Additionally I started raising pigeons and planted a number of vegetables that are in demand in my back yard. Daily sale of fresh vegetables and savings of approximately Rs.200.00 helped to meet the household expenses and repaying my loan.
However, unusually heavy rainy season of last year destroyed my home garden and chickens ready for the market. Thereafter I approached the YMCA and explained my plight. They listened to me sympathetically and have granted me a second loan of Rs.40,000.00 in appreciation of my initial efforts at poultry keeping and the additional efforts at raring pigeons and home gardening.
I am using the loan to order chickens from Colombo Wholesale dealers and sell at a profit in the locality. I am confident that in due course I will be able to repay my debt to the YMCA with the exception of the debt of their kindness and understanding shown in granting me the second loan.
Thanks to the Batticaloa YMCA I am maintaining my aged parents with the income earned by the sale of chicken.
